And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, the chief of the Jews.
- And he went to bed with Jesus at night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher, coming from God; for no man can do these signs which thou doest, if God be not with him.
- Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God.
- Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter into the womb again and be born?
- Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God.
- That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
- The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but thou knowest not whence it cometh, nor whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
- And Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can this be?
- And Jesus answered and said unto him, Thou art a teacher of Israel, and knowest not this?
- Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak what we know, and testify unto what we have seen; and you do not accept our testimony.
- If I have spoken unto you of earthly things, and believed not, how shall ye believe, if I shall speak unto you of the heavenly?
- And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that came down from heaven, the Son of man which is in heaven.
- And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;
- That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
- For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.
- He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- And the condemnation is this: That light cometh into the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
- For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not into the light, lest his deeds be reproved.
- But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are made in God.
Another testimony of John the Baptist
- After this went Jesus and his disciples to the land of Judaea; and was there with them, and baptized.
- Now John also baptized in Enon, near Salim, because there were many waters there; and they came and were baptized.
- For John had not yet been cast into prison.
- Then there was a matter between the disciples of John and the Jews concerning purification.
- And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, of whom thou hast borne witness, and baptizeth him, and all go to him.
- John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
Ye yourselves are witnesses unto me, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I am sent before him.
- He that hath the bride is the bridegroom; but the husband's friend, who watches him and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the voice of his husband. So now this my joy is fulfilled.
- He must increase, and I must decrease.
- He that cometh from above is above all; He who comes from the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.
- And whatsoever he hath seen, and hath heard this testifyeth; and no one accepts his testimony.
- He that hath received his testimony, he hath confirmed that God is true.
- For he whom God hath spoken speaketh the words of God; for God does not give him the Spirit by measure.
- The Father loveth the Son, and hath delivered all things into his hands.
- He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; but he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
