The Temptation of Jesus Christ - Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus Christ
1 - Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 - And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 - And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 - But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 - Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 - And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 - Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.*tempt: or, try, or, put to trial, or, proof
8 - Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 - And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 - Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 - Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Jesus begins his ministry in Galilee
12 - Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;*cast...: or, delivered up
13 - And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 - That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15 - The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 - The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 - From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The vocation of the disciples
18 - And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 - And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 - And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 - And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 - And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23 - And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 - And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 - And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

Jesus is transfigured before his disciples - Matthew 17

Jesus is transfigured before his disciples
1 - And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 - And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
3  And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
4 - Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
5 - While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
6 - And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
7 - And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
8 - And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
9 - And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
10 - And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11 - And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 - But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 - Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
14 - And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 - Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 - And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 - Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 - And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 - Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 - And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 - Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Jesus predicts his death and resurrection
22 - And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
23 - And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
24 - And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?*tribute: called in the original, didrachma, being in value fifteen pence sterling; about thirty seven cents
25 - He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 - Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 - Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.*a piece...: or, a stater: it is half an ounce of silver, in value two shillings and six pence, sterling; about fifty five cents

Resurrection of Jesus Christ - Matthew 28

Resurrection of Jesus Christ
1 - In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2 - And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.*was: or, had been
3 - His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 - And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 - And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 - He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 - And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
8 - And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
9 - And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
10 - Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
11 - Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
12 - And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
13 - Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
14 - And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
15 - So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
16 - Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
17 - And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
18 - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:*teach...: or, make disciples, or, Christians of all nations
20 - Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
