The Descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus' Disciples
- And when the day of Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together;
- And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty and mighty wind, and filled all the house whereon they sat.
- And there were tongues spread out over them, as of a fire, and they rested upon each one of them.
- And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Holy Ghost gave them utterance.
- And in Jerusalem were dwelling Jews, men of religion, out of all the nations that are under heaven.
- And when that sound came, a multitude was gathered together, and it was confounded: for every one heard them speak in their own language.
- And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, What! are not all these men Galileans speaking?
- How then do we hear every one of them in our own language in which we are born?
- Parthians and Medes, Elamites and those who dwell in Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
- And Phrygia and Pamphylia, and Egypt, and parts of Libya, together with Cyrene, and Roman strangers, both Jews and proselytes,
- Cretans and Arabs, we have all heard in our own tongues speak of the greatness of God.
- And all were amazed, and were suspended, saying one to another, What meaneth it? 13 - And others mocking said, They are full of new wine.
Peter's Speech on the Day of Pentecost
- But Peter stood up with the eleven, and lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of the Jews, and all ye that dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known unto you, and hearken unto my words.
- These men are not drunken, as ye think, the third hour of the day.
- But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
- And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, that I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;
- And I will pour out my servants and my maidservants in those days also, and they shall prophesy;
- And I will cause wonders to appear in heaven above; And signs down on earth, Blood, fire, and steam.
- The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord come;
And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- Men of Israel, listen to these words: To Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God by you with wonders, wonders, and signs, which God did for you among you, as you yourselves know;
- To him who was given you by the certain counsel and foreknowledge of God, you arrested, crucified, and killed by the hands of the unjust;
- Whom God hath raised up, loosed the cravings of death, for it was not possible that he should be held back by it;
- For David said of him, I saw the LORD always before me, because he is at my right hand, lest I be moved;
- Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue rejoiced; And my flesh shall rest in hope;
- Thou shalt not leave my soul to hell, nor suffer thine Holy One to see corruption;
- Thou hast made known unto me the ways of life; With your face you will fill me with joy.
- Men and brethren, let me say unto you freely concerning the patriarch David, that he died and was buried, and to this day is his sepulcher.
- And when he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn unto him, that with the oath of his loins he should lift up the Christ to sit upon his throne,
- In this prediction, he said of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, nor his flesh saw corruption.
- God raised up this Jesus, of which we are all witnesses.
- Therefore, being exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you now see and hear.
- For David did not go up into the heavens, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my Lord,' Sit at my right hand,
- Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
- And let all the house of Israel know with certainty, that God made him the Lord and Christ unto this Jesus whom ye crucified.
The First Conversion Of Persons To The Name Of Jesus Was Three Thousand
- And when they heard this, they were moved in their hearts, and they asked Peter and the rest of the apostles, What shall we do, brethren?
- And Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins: and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost;
- For the promise is concerning you, and your children, and all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this wicked generation.
- And those who gladly received his word were baptized. and on that day there were added almost three thousand souls,
- And they persevered in the doctrine of the apostles, and in fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
- And in the whole soul was fear, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
- And all that believed were together, and had all things in common.
- And they sold their possessions and goods, and distributed among them all, according to every man there was a matter. 46 - And they continued daily in the temple, and broke the bread in the house, and ate together with joy and singleness of heart,
- Praising God, and falling in the grace of all the people. And every day the Lord added to the church those who were to be saved.
