Message from John the Baptist to Jesus - Matthew 11

Message from John the Baptist to Jesus
1 - And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 - Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 - And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 - Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 - The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 - And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 - And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 - But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 - But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 - For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 - Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 - And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.*suffereth...: or, is gotten by force, and they that thrust men
13 - For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 - And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 - He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 - But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 - And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 - For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 - The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Woe to the impenitent cities!
20 - Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 - Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 - But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 - And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 - But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

The yoke of Jesus
25 - At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 - Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 - All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 - Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 - For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus sends seventy disciples on mission
1 - And after this the LORD appointed seventy more, and sent them before his face, two by two, into all the cities and places whither he was to go.
2 - And he said to them, "The harvest is indeed great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
3 - Ide; behold, I command you as lambs among wolves.
4 - Take no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no man by the way.
5 - And in whatever house you enter, say first, Peace be to this house.
6 - And if there be any son of peace, his peace shall rest upon him; and if not, it will return to you.
7 - And stay in the same house, eating and drinking of what they have, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
8 - And in whatever city you enter and receive you, eat what is offered to you.
9 - And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come unto you.
10 - But in whatever city you enter and do not receive, going out through its streets, say:
11 - At the dust that has taken you from your city, we have shaken you. But this, behold, the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
12 - And I say unto you, that there shall be more toleration in that day for Sodom than for that city.

Ais on unrepentant cities!
13 - Woe to you, Chorazin, out of you, Bethsaida! For if the wonders which were done in you were done in Tire and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting on sackcloth and ashes.
14 - Therefore, for Tire and Sidon there will be less rigor in the judgment than for you.
15 - And you, Capernaum, who have risen up to heaven, shall be brought low to hell.
16 - Whoever listens to you listens to me; and he who rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

Jesus Receives the Seventy Disciples of a Mission
17 - And the seventy returned with gladness, saying, Lord, by thy name, even the devils are subject unto us.
18 - And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 - And I give you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and all the strength of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
But do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you; rejoice because your names are written in the heavens.
21 - And at that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and the intelligent, and hast revealed them unto the little children; so it is, Father, because it pleased you so.
22 - Everything for my Father has been given to me; and no one knows who the Son is but the Father, or who the Father is but the Son, and whom the Son wills to reveal.
23 - And turning to the disciples, he said to them privately, Blessed are the eyes which see what you see.
24 - For I say unto you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see what ye see, and have not seen it; and hear what you hear, and they have not heard it.

Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan
25 - And there arose a certain teacher of the law, tempting him, and saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 - And he said unto him, What is written in the law? How do you read?
27 - And he answered and said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself.
28 - And he said unto him, Thou hast answered well; do this, and you shall live.
But Jesus, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
30 - And Jesus answered and said, A man came down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hand of the robbers, and they spoiled him, and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 - And a certain priest occasionally came down the same way; and when he saw it, he passed by.
32 - And also a Levite came to the place, and when he saw it, he passed by.
33 - But a Samaritan, who was traveling, came to his feet, and when he saw him, he moved with compassion.
34 - And he came and bound his wounds, and poured oil and wine to them. and set him on his beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him;
35 - And he departed the next day, and took forth two pounds, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and all that you spend most of all I'll pay you when I get back.
36 - Which of these three do you think was the next to him who fell into the hands of the robbers?
37 - And he said, He that hath mercy upon him. And Jesus said, Go, and do likewise.

Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary
38 - And it came to pass, as they were going by the way, that Jesus entered into a village; and a certain woman named Martha received him into his house;
39 - There was a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his word.
But Martha was distracted in many services; and said to him, Lord, will it not please thee that my sister let me serve alone? Tell him to help me.
41 - And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and afflicted with many things: but one is needful;
42 - And Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
