The vision of the destruction of the altar and promise of restoration - Amos 9

The vision of the destruction of the altar
1 - I saw the LORD standing on the altar; and said unto me, Strike the capital, and let the thresholds shake, and make all the pieces upon the heads of all them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword; none of them will be able to escape, none of them will escape.
2 - Though they dig to hell, my hand will take them away; and if I go up to heaven, I will bring them down from thence.
3 - And if they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will seek them, and I will bring them out from thence; and if I hide my eyes from the bottom of the sea, I will give orders to the serpent, and it will sting them.
4 - And if they go into captivity before their enemies, there will I command the sword to slay them; and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.
5 - For the LORD God of hosts toucheth the earth, and it melteth, and all that dwell therein shall weep; and it shall go up as a river, and shall go down as the river of Egypt.
6 - He buildeth his upper chambers in the heaven, and hath founded his vault in the earth, and he that calleth the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the earth; the LORD is his name.
7 - Are ye not, ye children of Israel, as the children of the Ethiopians? saith the LORD, Did I not bring up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines of Caphtor, and the Syrians of Kir?
8 - Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are against this sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; but I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
9 - For, behold, I will give orders, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations, even as a grain is sifted in the screen, and no grain shall fall upon the earth.
10 - All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, It shall not overtake us, neither shall evil find us.

Promise of restoration

11 - And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will raise up the tabernacle that is fallen from David, and I will repair its breaches, and will build again its ruins, and build it as it was in the days of old;
12 - That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the Gentiles which are called by my name, saith the LORD, that doeth these things.
13 - Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that he that tilleth shall overtake the reaper, and he that treadeth grapes to him that casteth the seed; and the mountains shall sprinkle with new wine, and all the hills shall melt.
14 - And I will bring the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the desolate cities, and dwell therein, and plant vineyards, and drink their wine, and make orchards, and eat the fruit thereof.
15 - And I will plant them in their own land, and they shall not be cut off from their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

The ten Commandments

The ten Commandments
1 - And God spake all these words, saying,
2 - I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of that which is in the heavens above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters beneath the earth.
5 - Thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.
6 - And I show mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and to them that keep my commandments.
7 - Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless to take his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 - Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work.
10 - But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God; thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy servant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.
11 - For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 - Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, neither covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any of thy neighbor's.
18 - And all the people saw the thunders and the lightnings, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and the people saw it, and departed, and stood afar off.
19 - And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; and let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20 - And Moses said unto the people, Fear not, God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not.
21 - And the people stood afar off. But Moses came to the darkness where God was.
22 - And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have spoken with you from the heavens.
23 - Thou shalt not make other gods with me; gods of silver or golden gods you will not do for yourselves.
24 - Thou shalt make me an altar of land, and thou shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, and thy sheep, and thy herds; in all the place, where I cause to celebrate the memory of my name, I will come to you and bless you.
25 - And if thou make me an altar of stones, thou shalt not make it of hewn stone; and if thou lift up thy graving upon it, thou shalt defile it.
26 - Thou shalt not go up to the altar with thy steps, lest thy nakedness be uncovered before them.
