The vision of a basket of fruits
- And the LORD God hath shewed me this: and, lo, a basket of summer fruit.
- And He said, What do you see, Amos? And I said: A basket of summer fruits. And the LORD said unto me, The end is come upon my people Israel; I will never go through it again.
- But the songs of the temple in that day shall be groaning, saith the Lord GOD; the corpses shall multiply; everywhere they will be cast out in silence.
- I have heard this, ye that gather the need of the needy; and destroy the wretched of the earth,
- Saying, When the new moon shall pass, that we may sell the corn, and the sabbath, that we may open the barns of corn, and diminish the ephah, and increase the shekel, and do deceitfully with scales,
- To buy the poor for money, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and to sell the refuse of the wheat?
- The LORD hath sworn by the glory of Jacob, I will not forget all his works forever.
- And because of this the earth shall not tremble, and all that dwell therein shall weep? Surely it shall rise up as the great river, and it shall be shaken, and it shall come down like the river of Egypt.
- And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that the sun shall set at noon, and the earth be darkened in the bright day.
- And I will make your feasts mournful, and all your songs in mourning; and I will put sackcloth upon all the loins, and baldness upon all heads; and I will make it to be as a mourning for an only son, and his end as a day of bitterness.
Hunger for the Word of God
- Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine upon the land; not hunger for bread, nor thirst for water, but to hear the words of the LORD.
- And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to the east; they shall run every where, seeking the word of the LORD, but shall not find it.
- In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint of thirst.
- So who swear by the guilt of Samaria, saying, As thy god liveth, O Dan; and live the way of Beersheba; they will fall, and never rise.
